![]() ![]() I'm definitely not saying that the best games of any given year need to be unknown in order to "legitimize" a list. It's been in development for five years, been covered by major gaming press at the various festivals/events throughout its development, and it was published by a major indie publisher with financial resources for marketing/publicity (Annapurna). That's all totally independent of its actual quality. ![]() I'd definitely say that something like Pyre is "high profile" because of its pedigree (Klei), and because of the sheer amount of coverage before and after release. Year-end lists are a time when game sites get major traffic, so it's a chance to show those new passersby games that they wouldn't otherwise encounter or know is worth another look. It's a lost opportunity IMO, and it seems silly to squander it. Otherwise, these sites are just doing end-of-year-lists because readers expect them to, not because the writers think it's a worthwhile critical pursuit. I want interesting end-of-year lists with some personality. But I'm not interested in reading "legit" lists. ![]()
